From seemingly nowhere, developer The Aristocrats has announced that Starship Troopers - Terran Command will be coming to PC next year. Published by Slitherine Ltd., this new title will be an RTS take on the cult-classic film from 1997. It will see players controlling the titular soldiers as they attempt to push back the invading alien bugs from their home planet.
In a post over on the Steam community forums, Slitherine’s developer director Iain McNeil writes, “If you take one of the most iconic movies from the 90s and shape it into a strategy game of survival, that mixes classic real-time mechanics, tower defense and tactical deployment of units then you have Starship Troopers – Terran Command in a nutshell.” The announcement trailer shows as much, with an art style that could honestly pass off as a sequel to Westwood’s Dune series.
As for what the game will bring to the table, The Aristocrats is promising that Terran Command will feature procedurally generated campaign missions. The storyline will even mold based on decisions you make with players being able to side with the Terran Command or become a maverick. It sounds very ambitious for an indie RTS title.
For inspiration, The Aristocrats looked no further than the original movie. As McNeil writes, “When creating this game, we aimed to capture the essence of the original movie and its universe. This is not only achieved by creating a coherent set of units and scenarios, but also by mimicking the language, visual elements, dialogues and the little details that made the film such an iconic, cult feature.”
Why now, though? McNeil says, “Modern strategy games are fast-paced and they successfully blend unit management, survival, and captivating storytelling. Nothing is more suited to this type of gameplay than the Starship Troopers universe.” I’m not sure I’d associate those things with this franchise, but at least someone is excited about Starship Troopers.
Currently, the only planned release is sometime in 2020. The game has a Steam store page up with some screenshots and the linked trailer. You can wishlist the title to stay on top of any new information as it becomes available.
