Rare is it that a game becomes more beloved and popular than the game it was originally inspired by, but that’s the wonderful tale of Stardew Valley. Drawing many elements from the classic Harvest Moon games, Stardew Valley is an ever-expanding game with so many secrets to discover, even more so now with its most recent version 1.5.
One element that perhaps every gamer can appreciate in the game is character customization. The latest update brought not only more clothes to collect and tailor, but also more hats as well. Fashion is subjective, but we’ll try our best to pick the best hats in all of Stardew Valley, because it’s important to farm in style.
Updated March 15th, 2021 by Hayley Mullen: Thanks to the latest update, there are 19 new hats to collect and choose from when your farmer wakes up in the morning. Some are available through the great tailoring game mechanic, and players can now own their own sewing machine thanks to Special Order Board. Some, however, are quite rare to find, whether it be random monster drops or needing 100% completion in the game. Don’t worry; we know how to get every hat on this list, and we’ll show you how.
15 Straw Hat
This hat is a classic that players are able to obtain very early in the game. It fits the farmer aesthetic quite well and goes with almost any pair of overalls! The Straw Hat can be obtained during the annual Egg Festival in Pelican Town, which takes place on the 13th of every Spring.
If the player collects 9 or more eggs during the Egg Hunt, they will be awarded the Straw Hat by Mayor Lewis. The hat can only be won once, with all subsequent wins being awarded 1,000 gold instead.
14 Propeller Hat
This hat is debatably goofy and slightly more difficult to obtain than the Straw Hat. The Propeller Hat can be made by using Cloth and a Miner’s Treat in Emily’s sewing machine. The player has several options for unlocking the Miner’s Treat: donating 60 items to the Museum will unlock the sewer, where Krobus sells Miner’s Treats randomly on Saturdays.
Donating all four Dwarvish scrolls to the Museum will also unlock Dwarf’s shop, where Miner’s Treats are sold. Finally, upgrading the kitchen and reaching Mining level 3 allows the player to unlock the recipe for Miner’s Treat. The Propellor is worth the effort with its cute color scheme, but unfortunately, it won’t let you fly.
13 Chef Hat
Hopefully players enjoy watching television, because that’s what is required in order to obtain this hat. The Chef Hat is unlocked by achieving the “Gourmet Chef” achievement, which involves the player cooking every recipe in the game.
Obtaining all recipes in the game requires not only reaching certain friend levels with a variety of different townsfolk but also watching as many episodes of “The Queen of Sauce” as possible. Some recipes are only unlockable on certain days of the year. The player can also unlock recipes by levelling up their skills, such as Farming, Mining, and Combat.
12 Arcane Hat & Witch’s Hat
Two hats make this spot on the list due to their similarities, more specifically their relation to the magic arts. The Arcane Hat, a copy of the Wizard’s own hat, can be unlocked by completing the Monster Eradication Goal of killing 100 Mummies. After that, it can be bought from Marlon for 20,000 gold. Razmodius clearly knows how to accessorize, which is why we’re thankful this hat was introduced back in 1.4.
Also introduced was the Witch Hat (perhaps a reference to Wizard’s ex?) Instead of throwing your well-earned Golden Pumpkin into the shipping bin, bring it over to Emily’s sewing machine (or unlock your own using the Special order board) and combine it with some cloth. You’ll get a stylish Witch Hat in return.
11 Cowboy Hat
No one radiates cowboy energy more than Gunther, operator of the library and Archaeology center of Pelican Town. With his blue getup and matching cowboy hat, who wouldn’t want to aspire towards such a look? Luckily it’s possible, but only with his help.
The elusive Cowboy Hat is available at the Abandoned House after earning “The Complete Collection” achievement, which means donating all 95 items to the Museum. After collecting the Stardrop and becoming Gunther’s personal hero, the player can swing by the Mouse’s shop and buy the hat for 1,000 gold, proving once and for all that they’re no city slicker.
10 Mushroom Cap
Mushroom Caps earn a place on this list due to their cuteness AND their rarity. Mushroom trees can randomly spawn on each day of Fall, having a 5% chance to do so. The game then chooses 10 tiles at random, and if those tiles possess a common, untapped tree, it will be transformed into a Mushroom Tree.
A Mushroom Tree can be tapped to obtain Common Mushrooms, Red Mushrooms, and Purple Mushrooms, but can also be chopped down for the same results. The Mushroom Cap has a 1% chance of spawning when cutting down a Mushroom Tree, making attempts to find this hat frustratingly unpredictable.
9 Cat Ears
The Stardew Valley protagonist can now become a Snapchat filter! Cat Ears (complete with whiskers) are purchasable from the Abandoned House after unlocking the “Beloved Farmer” achievement. This means reaching a 10-heart friend level with 8 different people in the game.
A recommended way of achieving the maximum heart level with villagers is to talk to them every single day (when possible), as the decay mechanic will cause their friendship level to drop when not spoken to. Decay will only stop once the maximum heart level is reached, though Marriage will not prevent it (don’t ignore your spouse!) Another way to increase friendship rapidly is to contribute the best possible food item to the Luau, as it will affect every villager present.
8 Garbage Hat
Similar to the mushroom cap, the chances of obtaining this hat are purely random, but the availability of trash cans make the Garbage Hat much easier to find. Since it is literally just a garbage can lid, it can be found by checking the garbage cans in Pelican Town, with each can having a 0.2% chance of having the hat. If found, the lid will explode off the can and into the player’s inventory.
To fully become the Trash Man, the player can also wear the Trash Can Shirt, which can be created using Cloth and any of the “trash” items found in crab pots, garbage cans, or while fishing (Soggy Newspaper, Driftwood, Broken Glasses, Broken CD, or Trash.)
7 Elegant Turban
Arguably the hardest hat to obtain in the game, the Elegant Turban is a sleek, black, and made of silk, adorned with gold trim. It is purchasable from the Abandoned House only after completing every single achievement in the game. This means shipping every item, catching every fish, getting married and having two children, reaching level 10 in every skill, and many more tasks.
For players who enjoy completing a game 100%, this hat will be the perfect reward to strive for, and a symbol of status to show one’s true dedication to the valley.
6 Magic Cowboy Hat & Magic Turban
These may not be the most difficult hats to obtain, but they sure are the most dazzling. Both the Magic Cowboy Hat and the Magic Turban are sold by the Desert Trader in Calico Desert, first available upon the completion of the Vault bundles in the Community Center. The Bus to Calico Desert will start operating again (thanks to Pam) and the player will be able to peruse the Trader’s wares.
The Magic Cowboy hat is sold for 333 Omni Geodes on odd-numbered calendar days, while the Magic Turban is sold for 333 Omni Geodes on even-numbered days. The hats are embued with prismatic energy, making them flow endlessly through every color in the rainbow (and ones in between, too.) If you want to show your true colors, these are the hats for you.
5 Deluxe Pirate Hat
This isn’t your every day pirate hat; this is…an advanced Pirate Hat, or Delux Pirate Hat to be accurate. Added in the 1.5 update, this hat can be found in random treasure chests encountered in the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island. You may have to do quite a few runs through the dungeon in order to get it, but there are added perks that come with owning one.
If the player wears any pirate hat or patch when visiting the Pirate Cove on a busy night, they will receive a free bottle of Mead from the bartender (as the supply is only for visiting pirates.) Plus, you’ll look too cool for anyone to even think of messing with you.
4 ???
Most players of the game know about the amazing developed behind it all, ConcernedApe. Similar to other indie developer success stories, ConcernedApe has created the entirety of the game (and its updates) largely by himself, a mind-blowing accomplishment for sure.
As a special thank-you for completing absolutely everything the game currently has to offer, you can wear ConcernedApe’s face on top of yours and feel the immense pride of being a master farmer. It may be more of a mask than a hat, but it’s nice to see that purple face with his cool shades smiling back at you!
3 Mr. Qi’s Hat
Ever wanted to be like the mysterious Mr. Qi? Now it’s possible to own the cryptic man’s hat and wear everywhere you go. Owner of the Casino and initiator of many quests, Mr. Qi is the key (pun intended) to unlocking lots of content in Stardew Valley, including a variety of challenges that will engage and reward the player with unique items such as the Horse Flute (summons your horse anywhere outside) and Magic Bait (allows all fish to be caught regardless of season, time, weather, or the water you fish in.)
Once Qi’s Walnut Room is unlocked on Ginger Island, the player can obtain Qi Gems by completing all sorts of challenges. Among the redeemable items is Mr. Qi’s Hat, a perfect replica of the entity’s style for just 5 Qi Gems.
2 Tiger Hat
There are several new monsters introduced in the latest update, but perhaps none more cute than the Tiger slime monsters that frequent Ginger Island and the Volcano Dungeon. These slimes are quite powerful and are capable of dropping all kinds of loot, including Diamonds, Jade, Dwarf Scrolls, Mango Sapling, and much more.
The greatest and rarest loot drop from these gooey, striped creatures is the Tiger Hat, which has a 0.1% chance of being dropped after defeat. This hat is complete with stripes and its own whiskers, making it extremely fashionable for both humans and horses to wear.
1 Frog Hat
No doubt that the internet’s fascinating obsession with frogs has made many Stardew players excited by the addition of more frog content in the game. Not only can players meet an NPC named the Gourmand Frog, but you can catch and wear an amazing Frog Hat inside his cave. You’ll have to have unlocked Ginger Island to meet this frog, who will ask to see you growing various different crops in the island farm soil. Show him what he desires, and you’ll receive Golden Walnuts in return.
For the hat, you’ll simply need to pull out your fishing rod and cast it in the small pools of water in the cave. It certainly helps having another pair of eyes along for the ride, especially a slimy friend.
