If you haven’t heard yet, Stardew Valley recently released update 1.4, and it’s huge. The update overhauled tons of little quality of life changes and added some major content to the game. This even included more heart events with your favorite partners and a way to finally free the dog from his house. If that’s not good enough, then there are new monsters to battle, hairstyles to use, and even a special farming tool to find. With all these amazing new features, though, you may feel a bit overwhelmed and not know what to do first. Below we have compiled a list of the ten ways that update 1.4 improved upon Stardew Valley.
10 Trash Bear
Trash bear is one of the cuter editions to the game, but you won’t be able to find him right away. In fact, the trash bear doesn’t appear in the game until year three. When he does appear, you will find him sitting on a cliff near the sewer staring out into the void. To trigger his event, you must give him requested items and even cook dishes for him. When you’ve given him enough goodies, the magic will begin.
Trash Bear will float up into the air and across town using his magical powers to clean up Pam’s yard and help Dusty get out of his dog house.
9 Movie Theater
The movie theater is another event that won’t trigger until you’ve hit year three. You will also need to complete the Joja or community center line to unlock the facility. If you go the Joja route, then you can simply purchase the theater if you choose the community center, though, then you will need to complete an extra bundle. Either way, you’re looking at using quite a bit of resources to unlock the facility.
Once you do get the movie theater, you can buy two tickets for 1,000 gold and take villagers to see a flick. Picking the right flick and buying them a preferred snack can net you up to 200 affection points.
8 Fourteen Heart Events
One of the biggest additions for fans of the dating mechanics in the game was the addition of more heart events. Now when you get your spouse to fourteen hearts, another event will trigger. Each partner has a unique event that is tailored to their personality, and uncovering them all can be fun and exciting. Events range from having pet frogs to your house being decorated overnight.
These events also help the game’s dating world have life after marriage, which is something tons of simulation titles struggle with.
7 Four Corners Map
One of the new updates that really helps out with multiplayer sessions is the edition of the new farm map. The Four corners map lets you put a cabin in a small square section of the map, each with different focuses like fishing or farming. In addition, the greenhouse, pet, and cave are all directly located in the center of the map so that all players can have equal access to the resources.
This helps each player have their own little spot on the map to grow their farm without having to worry about encroaching on others’ territory.
6 Making Clothes
One of the newest editions to the game helps you further customize your character. Once you find a piece of cloth from a mummy or make it yourself using wool and the loom, Emily will appear at your home the next day. She will tell you that you can feel free to use her sewing machine to make new clothes. Now the machine is rather interesting is you have to put in items to create different pieces.
Luckily, dedicated players have now made charts to help you figure out just what items give you the clothes you want.
5 Better Multiplayer
Right away, you and your friends will notice some updates to the multiplayer system. One of the biggest and best changes is the ability to change the way money is handled. When you start a new multiplayer session, the game will ask you if you want to combine your gold or split it between players. This can help with money management, especially if one player does more work than the others.
You also have the ability to switch the feature on and off by simply going to the mayor’s house and interacting with a money log.
4 Fish Ponds
Fish ponds are a new feature that fits right into the rest of the farming aspects of the game. They are relatively cheap to make just take a bit of stone, and some algae and are small enough to set-up in rows. Best of all, you can put pretty much any fish in the pond to get eggs. If you want to make caviar, though, you have to capture a Sturgeon and use their roe in the recipe.
Fish ponds can net you more money than just selling the fish outright, and the fish will request items like sea urchins from time to time to improve the pond.
3 The Golden Scythe
One of the newest additions to the quarry is a small cave full of grey and brown slimes. If you are brave and venture a bit farther in, though, you will run into flying skulls. Players with a good sword should be able to cut these enemies down and work towards the end of the cave. Once you finally manage to reach it, you will be greeted by what looks to be a statue of the grim reaper who is holding a beautiful gold scythe.
You get to take the scythe with you, which is much better at cutting down grass and weeds to feed your animals with.
2 Dating Krobus
One of the stranger aspects added to the game is the ability to date Krobus. He can be found in the sewer and is a friendly monster who is shy towards humans. He loves things like void eggs and diamonds that will quickly increase his heart level. Once you have him up to ten hearts, you can propose to him, and he will move into your house, even making his own room.
Krobus isn’t considered a romantic partner, though, and the whole situation is more like having a strange roommate that you may be dating, but you’re not really sure.
1 The Desert Trader
One of the best editions to the desert is the desert trade. He is set up in a tent with his camel every day of the week and trades goods for jewels and geodes. He is a great source for getting bombs, spicy eel, and even desert totems. If you happen to pick up a lot of Omni geodes, you can even trade them for an artifact box to quickly feel up your museum collection.
He also offers extremely rare hats and a butterfly hutch that you can decorate your farm with. All you need to do is start saving your diamonds and bat wings.
