Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned an estimated $88.3 million this weekend in the US, bringing its stateside box office to a massive $740.2 million, only $20 million behind Avatar’s record.

It’s now pretty much certain that Episode VII will pass Avatar’s $760.5 million box office haul, with the question being how high it will end up. Something beyond $850 million seems entirely possible.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set a host of records on its way, the latest being the fastest film to $700 million domestically – taking just 16 days. Avatar needed 72 days to reach the $700 million mark.

Worldwide The Force Awakens has taken over $1.5 billion, placing it as the fifth-biggest movie of all time behind Furious 7 ($1.515 billion), The Avengers ($1.52 billion), Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Titanic ($2.19 billion) and Avatar which sits pretty with $2.78 billion.

The Force Awakens will certainly pass the one billion dollar movies, but bettering the totals of Titanic and Avatar will require continued US earnings and big takings in China when it opens on January 9.
