Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the highest-grossing film of 2015 in the UK, taking £97.4 million at the box office.

The figure saw the seventh episode in the Star Wars saga overtake Spectre’s £92 million total.

In terms of the all-time biggest films in the UK, The Force Awakens has also passed Avatar which earned £94 million and looks likely to pass Skyfall’s record of £102.9 million.

Meanwhile in the US, The Force Awakens performed better than early estimates indicated, taking $90.24 last weekend. This leaves the movie just $18.4m short of Avatar’s US box office record, which could well be beaten later this week.
