The Star Wars franchise has always been massively profitable in virtually every commercial endeavor it enters, and so it comes as no surprise that on the App Store and Google Play there has been more than $1 billion generated in global player spending in the last six years. These figures come from Sensor Tower Store Intelligence, a leading provider of market intelligence and insights for the global app economy.
Most impressive still is that while there have been many games that have borrowed the Star Wars license, most of that revenue comes from a single title: Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. Its revenue count stands at $924 million, and it is on track to reach $1 billion in 2020. Second and third place in revenue go to Star Wars :Commander and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, contributing each $93 million and $11 million, respectively.
Predictably, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes began to see massive growth in 2015 following the release of the first film in the new trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, seeing revenue go from $18 million to $216.6 million in 2016.
Players of the game will not likely be surprised at hearing the news, because while it is free-to-play, they are constantly reminded that they can buy items to level up their characters gear, effectively providing a significant advantage in arena-style content to edge out others players. The game is in every sense of the word pay-to-win when it comes to acquiring powerful gear and components quickly, although the argument can be made that the same items are obtainable for free with enough grinding over months or even years.
Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes digs deep into the pool of characters available within the Star Wars universe, and with each new film there is more content to release into the game and more money to be spent.
Now, the question is whether the game can sustain the revenue it has generated over the past six years, or if it will begin to drop off now that the main film trilogy has ended. Disney has already announced an untitled Star Wars film for release in 2022, and The Mandalorian television show is currently a hit as well, so there may be more than enough content to keep players interested and - more importantly for EA - spending.
