A few years ago, beating The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in under 10 minutes would seem like an impossible task. With the series of steps needed to perform specific glitches, plus the timing for the glitches, beating the game in under 10 minutes would not happen. Now, the dream has turned into reality as a new world record for the game has been claimed.

Speedrunner Lozoots has managed to set a new world record for the Any% category for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, clocking in at under 10 minutes, or to be more specific, 9 minutes and 57 seconds. The speedrunner’s name may sound familiar because he held a previous world record for the game at 12 minutes and 59 seconds. This time around, the speedrunner was able to shave off three minutes and two seconds, essentially setting a new record under a single digit number.

Lozoots used the same tactics as in his previous world record run. Specifically, he was able to take advantage of the ‘Stale Reference Manipulation’ glitch and ‘Arbitrary Code Execution’ in order to set a new time. There are of course a few differences. For instance, at the end of the new world record, Lozoots spawned into the cutscene where Ganondorf is being sealed away. In his previous run, he spawned into the credits themselves. Aside from that, the rest of the speedrun is the same but with a few different routing differences.

Considering the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out in 1998, and these new tactics have been discovered today, saying how all of this is impressive (and perhaps insane) would be an understatement. Additionally, setting a world record in under 10 minutes is even more astounding and hard to believe.

Nonetheless, it’s safe to assume that the speedrunning community will be able to find new tricks and shortcuts down the line. On top of that, with all of these new tactics being discovered, how will other The Legend of Zelda games be treated? For instance, will The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask experience the same rebirth as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or will new tricks be uncovered in the future?
