Gamers with offensive PSD IDs will see them changed automatically by Sony, following the announcement all PlayStation owners had been waiting for.
Sony revealed this week that all users will have one free opportunity to change their PSN ID, finally removing the burden of embarrassment on many longtime players going by the ill-advised names they were wishing they’d waited a bit later to decide on.
So yes, you can finally change that corny name you’ve been touting for years while struggling over whether or not you should just create a new account and lose all of your trophies. Sony is letting you do this in a few simple steps, but if you want to change it again, it won’t be free.
“We’re excited to announce that the online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to all PlayStation 4 owners later today,” the electronics company announced via a blog post on Thursday. “You’ll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser, and that feature will also be available starting today. Thanks to all of you who participated in the beta preview program back in October/November and who gave us your feedback!
“The first change is free, and changes after that will cost $9.99 USD / CAD. For PlayStation Plus members, it will cost $4.99 USD/ CAD for each change after the first one.”
Any overly comedic gestures or moves in poor taste where IDs are concerned will be flagged by Sony and names will be changed to a temporary placeholder reading ‘TempXXXX” (the Xs will be numbered).
Basically, you’re going to be asked to change your new name to something more friendly if Sony thinks it sucks. But you could stick to Temp1234 if you don’t mind other players knowing you’re not cool.
