On Monday, Sony launched their PlayStation Protection Plan. This plan allows PS3 and PSP owners to extend a limited 1-year manufacturer’s warranty by either one or two years. Also, for PSP owners, there is a plan to cover accidental damage, including cracked screens from drops.

The plans available are:

  • PS3 — 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99) PSP — 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99) PSP Accidental Damage — 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)

Plans can be purchased for PS3s that are still under their 1-year manufacturer warranties, as well as PSP-3001 and PSPgo systems within 30 days of their purchase date.

These prices are very good considering if you have to send in your console for repair the costs are between $120 and $150. This would have saved me a lot of money on my PS3 that recently got the Yellow Light Of Death.

The perks of the plan include:

  • Direct access to PlayStation Support specialists No out-of-pocket expenses for qualified claims Pre-paid shipping box PlayStation® quality, PlayStation® parts, PlayStation® Service Centers Backed by the team that brought you the PlayStation experience

There is a lot of fine print to these plans, so I highly recommend reading it here.  Also, the plans are not currently available in all US states or in Canada at all.

I’m actually pretty excited for this because I was always sketched out by Best Buy and other stores trying to sell me extended warranties on my systems. Hopefully Microsoft will hop on this train next for Xbox 0wners.

Are you interested in this protection plan? Is it something you plan on buying for your system? Let us know in the comments.
