The 2019 Esports Awards highlighted some of the most influential people in the esports industry. From veterans to rookies, console to PC, the scene’s greatest players were celebrated. Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf shined throughout the night, winning some of the most prestigious awards available, ‘PC Rookie of the Year’ and ‘PC Player of the Year.’ It’s hard to knock the young man for how the results panned out, but it feels like there was a missed opportunity to celebrate a particular player representing the Overwatch League - Jay “Sinatraa” Won.
Sinatraa came into the Overwatch League dubbed as the “Chosen One” for the San Francisco Shock. He had an almost unmatched potential, but he needed to learn to trust his teammates instead of relying on his own talent to win matches. In 2019 it took a few matches for Sinatraa to find his footing, but once he did, he had possibly the most dominant run in the history of professional Overwatch.
Sinatraa’s 2019 included him being crowned the Overwatch League MVP, winning the Overwatch League Grand Finals, winning the Overwatch World Cup and being crowned Overwatch World Cup MVP. He was the most dominant player in the game throughout 2019 and should have been awarded the 2019 Esports ‘PC Player of the Year’ because of it. There is always next year though, but if Sinatraa continues to play at the same level going forward, he wouldn’t even need the validation as he could possibly go down as the greatest Overwatch player in history.
