At long last, the saga of Shovel Knight will come to an end. Developer Yacht Club Games has announced that the two final expansions for its retro-inspired platformer will be releasing next month. Coming to all platforms (minus the 3DS and Vita) on December 10, 2019, both King of Cards and Showdown will give players even more chances to engage with the wonderful world of shovelry.
King of Cards is an expansion/sequel of sorts to the main Shovel Knight campaign. It will star boss character King Knight and feature a complete gameplay shift from the platforming roots of the main campaign. King of Cards is more like a TCG and has deckbuilding options that players will engage enemies with.
Showdown, on the other hand, is more akin to Smash Bros. With a cast including most of the boss characters and a few new enemies, players will face off in multiplayer battles to defeat each other and reign victorious. There is also a “campaign,” of sorts, that will feature specific endings for each character.
Shovel Knight is a prime example of how to properly do a Kickstarter campaign. It may have taken nearly five years for all of its promised content to arrive, but the main game was lovingly crafted and feature more than enough to please picky players. It doesn’t hurt that each expansion has practically been better than the last, improving key areas and providing new perspectives on the original story.
That Yacht Club Games hasn’t demanded extra money for everything else is insane. Shovel Knight went on sale for roughly $15 during 2016, yet that price still netted you everything on offer. Talk about being generous to your consumers.
If you happened to back Shovel Knight on Kickstarter years ago or purchased it before Specter of Torment’s release, you’ll be given these games for free. Both will be available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and Switch. Treasure Trove, the main package for everything, retails for $24.99 on digital platforms. A physical package will be available for $39.99 on Xbox One and Switch December 10, 2019. PS4 editions have been delayed until early 2020.
