More than 500,000 pre-registrations have been made for Shadowgun War Games, which is set to launch on February 16, 2020. The number of people waiting to play the newest 5v5 mobile FPS is impressive, and looks to grab its fair share of the consumer market - especially if it can develop a following in the esports scene.
A look at the trailer reveals a game that at first glance could easily be mistaken for Overwatch based on the colors used and the map design. Even the heroes look heavily inspired from Blizzard’s game, as a sniper is shown briefly wearing an outfit that shares most of the same colors as Widowmaker. Playing off the aesthetic of the popular PC game has probably helped drive awareness for Shadowgun War Games, given its large pre-registration numbers.
Gameplay looks familiar as well, with point control and capture the flag featured as teams swarm onto an objective. Shadowgun War Games seems primed for esports participation, as seen in the Gamescom 2018 video below, and now is a great time to be capitalizing on the growth of the mobile competitive market.
Shadowgun War Games will have a low barrier to entry thanks to it being free-to-play, and monetization will be based off cosmetic items, and possibly additional character unlocks. Mobile gaming continues to grow in popularity because of these low barriers to entry. While one may not be able to afford a high-end gaming PC and the purchase price for AAA games, most people around the world have access to a smartphone or tablet that can run these games.
Other mobile games that have grown immensely in the esports scene are Vainglory, Clash Royale, and Arena of Valor. Each has seen growth in competitive play at tournaments worldwide, with increasing participation in Asian and Latin American markets. If Shadowgun War Games can tap into those pools of players, it will achieve great success, and looks to give Call of Duty Mobile a run for its money, which had an impressive 100 million downloads in the first seven days of its release.
With the launch now less than two months away, we will soon see if the game lives up to its hype. Shadowgun War Games is available now to pre-register for its upcoming release in February of 2020 on both the App Store and Google Play.
