Anime side-scroller Dead or School is getting released on the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The game was originally released in on Steam in 2018 and in Japan on the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 in 2019.

The game was developed by the three-man Studio Nanafushi team, who had a difficult time getting the game made. They had set up an Indiegogo campaign in 2016 to help fund the game, but it didn’t pan out. They pressed on and eventually got their game made. After it’s a Japanese release, it has now been picked up by publisher Marvelous Europe for distribution to Western countries on March 13.

According to TheGG, the game is about a school girl called Hisako and her battles against the zombies that have taken over Tokyo. Her goal is to exterminate the zombies so she can eventually go back to school like a normal child. She uses the subway to travel to different landmarks in Tokyo like Roppongi, Shinjuku, and Akihabara fighting zombies with an assortment of both short-range and long-range weapons.

The gameplay is action-based, with many RPG elements. Hisako is able to collect different types of loot like cash and parts to upgrade her skills and weapons. As with most games, the more she fights, the stronger she gets and there are numerous ways to upgrade her skill tree based on player preference. She can only carry three weapons at a time, a machine gun, an explosive weapon, and a melee weapon, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Dead or School is known for its anime style and crazy battles. Hisako wears a revealing schoolgirl outfit while she fights, and the more damage she takes, the more her clothes rip. For a little school girl, she is strong enough to take on an assortment of huge and scary monsters without fear.

The limited reviews point to the game being trashy fun without much attention to detail or great graphics. The levels are very similar and it offers up the usual anime tropes. Where the game excels is in its fights and weapons upgrades. Dead or School is a niche game, and for those looking for something different it could be some harmless fun.
