Oh Sega, when I think about the amount of time I wasted playing on my Mega Drive (the European name for the Genesis) during my youth, it’s kinda disturbing. To this day I still get flashbacks from the sound-bite “SEGA” that accompanied most games on boot up. There it is, late at night, in my dreams.
Of course it used to be a case of hunting down long lost cartridges if you wanted to crack out the nostalgia back in the day (or trying to download ROMs on your 28.8kbps connection, tut tut) but thankfully companies like Sega have realized these old games still have a fan-base and that means, of course, they are an easy source of income. From Greatest Hits collections on every console going from the PS2 to the Xbox 360, as well as numerous entries on the Wii Virtual Console, Sega have now found a new home to make their own…
The iPhone App Store.
Apple has not been a fan of allowing emulators into their precious App Store before, for obvious reasons. They did accidentally allow a NES emulator to pass through previously, but ripped it off the market before anyone managed to get their grubby little hands on it. However this time it’s legal, and that makes all the difference.
The free app, titled Ultimate Genesis, will come bundled with Space Harrier II and will allow you to add more using in-app purchases. Currently set titles are:
- Sonic the Hedgehog @ $5.99 Golden Axe @ $4.99 Ecco the Dolphin @ $2.99 Shining Force @ $2.99
Ultimate Genesis is set for release towards the beginning of February.
