From what we can see in this new trailer, it looks like Samurai Shodown will be a faithful port. While no details were given about character passes or what content would be immediately accessible upon purchase, it is safe to assume that SNK will package the game will all available characters based on the release date.
Outside of a routine trailer with gameplay footage, the announcement trailer goes give us a few new details. Split Joy-Con play is available, which allows for instantaneous multiplayer action on the go. It’s probably more advisable to get some decent controllers though (may we suggest 8bitdo’s lineup?).
The revival of the dormant fighter franchise has been a big hit, earning praise and year-end award considerations as one of the best fighting games of the year. Series protagonist Haohmaru will be featured as a guest character for the second season of Soulcalibur VI and SNK is doing what it can to ride this momentum in hopes that its King of Fighters series can catch some of its shine.
While Samurai Shodown might be out of the reach of the typical Switch user, Nintendo’s hybrid system is making waves to draw fighting game fans to the platform. Samurai Shodown will be joining the ranks of Mortal Kombat 11, Dragonball FighterZ and Skullgirls as some of the premier fighters on the console.
Whether or not this is simply Nintendo taking advantage of a drought of similar titles, Switch owners are getting a really solid deal. Be sure to look for Samurai Shodown when it lands in early 2020.
