Tablets such as Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 vs iPad Pro are definitely popular choices these days when it comes to snazzy consumer tech. From kicking back with a movie or video game to connecting with loved ones and even doing our day job, tablets can be used for virtually anything you could need them for.

The fact that there are so many to choose from, though, is both an advantage and a drawback. The options from Samsung and Apple are definitely among the biggest hitters. We’re going to examine and compare the Galaxy Tab S7 vs iPad Pro and see which one takes first prize.

Design

Both tablets feature an aluminum frame and a magnetic strip for attaching a stylus to the device; definitely handy, especially for those with artistic intentions. They also both have a quad-speaker setup and lack a headphone jack, so it’s essentially a draw in this regard.

The designs differ in that the iPad Pro is more square, whereas the Galaxy Tab S7 is more rectangular. Both designs are rather minimalist, with thin bezels and flat edges. You’re going to get slightly more color options with the S7, but the colors are quite classic and understated overall.

Another difference is in the dimension and weight of the two tablets; the iPad Pro has a larger display but is also substantially larger on the whole, as well as a lot heavier. There are tablets out there that are even bigger than this, but it’s worth considering whether the heftier iPad Pro is what you need.

Display

The two displays are similar in that they have a 120 Hz adaptable refresh rate, but differ in pretty much every other aspect. The iPad Pro has an additional 1.9 inches of screen space measured diagonally and a different aspect ratio. This gives it more of a squared look with more vertical space, which feels more expansive.

The category where the S7’s wider display comes into its own is when watching videos and movies. The S7’s aspect ratio is definitely more suited for this experience. In terms of display quality, the iPad Pro is definitively superior, with its mini-LED display over the LCD display.

This makes the screen brighter and sharper than the S7. If you’re deadset on a Samsung model and want a more comparable display, you should consider the S7+ with its OLED technology.

Performance

When it was first released, the S7 definitely packed the biggest and speediest punch for an Android tablet, with its Snapdragon 865+ chipset. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t compare well to the M1 chipset of the iPad Pro.

While the S7 is certainly capable of handling almost any task you’d want to use it for, the M1 is just more powerful; this 5nm chipset even beats some desktop-grade processors in terms of performance. In Geekbench 5, the M1 outperforms the Snapdragon 865+ in essentially every metric.

Though, in reality, the S7 still holds its own since its hardware is well-optimized. The GPU of the iPad Pro is equally impressive, so you’ll have no problems playing the most intensive games. The display will likely look better on the S7, though.

It’s worth mentioning the iPad Pro also beats the S7 in terms of RAM and storage options. We get either 6 or 8 GB of RAM with the S7, but this goes up to a potential 12 GB with the iPad Pro. As well as this, the Pro is available with a massive 1 to 2 TB of storage, which is simply humongous compared to the maximum of 256 GB with the S7.

For professional photographers and video editors, this will be immensely useful and makes for no contest. You could use an external SD card with the S7 to increase your storage, but it’s nice to get this built-in with the Pro.

Software

There’s definitely a wider selection of apps for the Pro than for the S7, and they tend to be better optimized to make the best use of the screen space. While both behave similarly to their smartphone counterparts, the Pro can run two apps in split-screen mode, much like a Mac can, which is convenient.

The S7 can be used with a desktop-style interface, with a taskbar and start menu along the bottom and moveable and resizeable windows, so this is a different but also useful option. Your choice will depend on how you like to use your tablet.

Generally, those looking for a more computer-style experience will prefer the S7. But, realistically, you may struggle to use more than a couple of apps simultaneously due to the relatively smaller display.

In terms of accessories, both tablets are compatible with a stylus pen and keyboard. You do get the S-Pen included with the S7, though, which does help to cut costs. Keyboards must be bought separately, but it helps that Samsung’s is a lot cheaper.

Apple’s keyboard is generally considered easier to use and more precise than Samsung’s. Likewise, the Apple Pencil is more responsive to pressure with lower latency. This essentially makes the Pro the better choice when it comes to drawing and making heavy use of the stylus.

The only aspect where the S7 wins is the practicality of keeping the stylus safe when not in use. While the Pro does have a magnetic strip on the side, the S-Pen is attached to the back and then covered by a flap. This means it’s a lot harder to accidentally drop or lose the S-Pen; something that can and does happen with the Pro.

Cameras

We’re getting a similar distribution of cameras with both models, but the Pro has better ultrawide quality, as well as video capabilities. The S7 can record up to 4K 30fps videos and 1080p 30fps videos on its rear and front cameras respectively, whereas the Pro is capable of 4K 60fps and 1080p 60fps videos on its rear and front cameras.

The Pro’s front-facing camera can also make use of Center Stage technology, which holds the subject in the middle of the frame even if moving. The S7 is said to be better at taking landscape photos in front-facing mode, however, due to the positioning of the camera.

While neither is going to beat any of the latest smartphones in terms of camera quality, they’re still suitable for most use cases. That said, the Pro definitely wins in terms of overall camera quality and capturing video. The LIDAR scanner also helps if you’re using augmented reality apps.

Battery Life

Clearly, the Pro has the slightly bigger battery of the two. While the LCD display of the S7 has better energy efficiency overall, the OS of the Pro is more efficient. So, in reality, it’s a close call.

With both devices, you’ll most likely get roughly a full day’s usage. They will both take around two hours to reach a full charge, so it’s essentially a tie. It should be said that a fast-charging adapter is not included and must be purchased separately.

Price

The area where the S7 undoubtedly pulls ahead is when it comes to costs. You’re looking at a price that’s at least $300 lower, so the S7 is more budget-friendly; especially when you consider you’re saving almost $100 by not having to buy the stylus as an extra. For a tablet with an impressive performance that almost matches the Pro, the S7 gives very good value for money.

It’s hard to tell, but generally, the iPad Pro is the better choice when it comes to most applications. Games and movies run smoother, drawing and doing work are easier and videos look better. The S7 can be used more similarly to a laptop, though, and the viewing experience of movies and games is improved with the wider aspect ratio.

The S7 is also significantly cheaper than the Pro and performs almost just as well. So, the budget-conscious will find it easy to choose the S7 over the Pro, especially if they value 5G connectivity. If a wide resolution isn’t your priority and money is no object, the Pro is likely the smarter choice.
