Yes, boys and girls, you read that right. Although Apple’s iPad isn’t available until tomorrow, Telltale Games have just announced that The Penal Zone, the first episode of the new Sam and Max series The Devil’s Playhouse, is now available for download on the iPad app store. Not only can you buy it right now, but it’s available for the meager price of $9.99 - and hey, if you’re dropping $500 for an iPad, an extra ten bucks won’t be any trouble.

That being said, you can buy the entire series for just $35 if you pre-order the PC/Mac versions now at the official site.

“But,” I hear you cry, “What is Sam and Max? What do they do? Why should I buy The Penal Zone?” Well, dear reader, I’m glad you asked that.

Sam and Max are a detective duo, fighting crime and solving mysteries on the streets of New York City. The Devil’s Playhouse is the third series starring the pair, preceded by the fantastic Sam and Max Save The World and Sam and Max Beyond Time and Space. The series is typical of the head-scratching point ’n’ click genre, with one tiny detail that makes it stand head and shoulders above the rest; it’s hilariously funny. There aren’t many games that can claim to make the players laugh out loud, but if there was a competition, Sam and Max would win hands down.

The Devil’s Playhouse’s story is simple. An otherworldly power has decided that it should bestow special abilities among those deserving of it; Gods, Renowned Scholars and… Max. Yes, that’s right. One half of the infamous duo will be granted a special power (although I won’t ruin which power that may be) and then hilarity ensues as the duo have to save humanity, etc., etc. A forgettable story it may sound, but you definitely don’t want to miss it!
