You heard right, Spyro the Dragon may very well be receiving the same treatment as last year’s much anticipated remaster, the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy.
According to sources familiar with the project, Kotaku reported that publisher Activision and the same development team behind the Crash Bandicoot remaster, Vicarious Visions, are currently working on a Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Remaster.
It is believed that the remastered trilogy—which will feature all three original Insomniac games: Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage (otherwise known as Gateway to Glimmer in other regions), and Year of the Dragon— could be announced as soon as next month, with an expected release during the third quarter of 2018. This release window does seem to make quite a lot of sense though, as it would be the perfect way to celebrate Spyro’s 20th anniversary that is coming up this September.
Much like other remasters, the game will feature new assets, lighting, animations, reworked cinematics, and even a remastered soundtrack. Along with these fancy updates, the game is also said to be receiving a number of much needed mechanical overhauls such as a more user-friendly save system that will surely be much appreciated among fans. Let’s face it, no one wants a save system like games in the early PlayStation era.
Unfortunately though, one source does seem to claim that much like the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, the game will be a one-year timed exclusive for PlayStation 4, before ultimately being ported over to other consoles such as Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2019.
If we’re lucky, the report even notes that the trilogy may very well see content that was initially cut from the original games, much like when the N.Sane Trilogy received the Stormy Ascent level that was previously only available to those that owned a GameShark or emulator.
With the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Triology having sold over 2.5 million copies on PS4 alone since it launched last year in June, it would be safe to say that Activision will be looking to capitalize on fans dedication to these much beloved early era platformers – ultimately making these rumors seem even more legitimate.
Given that the rumors prove true and that Vicarious Visions is actually back on board, we think we can all agree that the Spyro remaster is in great hands.
