Free to play battle royale Knives Out could be coming to PlayStation 4 and 5. Knives Out was released by Netease in 2017 on mobile and has skyrocketed in popularity, especially in Japan. Despite flying under the radar with Western players, the game was the highest-grossing battle royale of 2018, beating out huge contenders like Fortnight and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The LinkedIn page of Vincent Chi, NetEase’s product manager and department art director listed Knives Out as a project in “full development” for the PS4 and PS5. Since the account started attracting attention, the description was changed to “SONY Playstation ® Console,” but the rumors continue to swirl.
The success of the PS4 launch could decide whether or not Knives Out is later released on PS5 or not. It is currently available on Android and iOS devices, as well as the Nintendo Switch in Japan. Considering that the PS5 will be backward compatible, there is a chance that the PS4 version of Knives Out will also work on the PS5. There is still no evidence of whether Knives Out will be coming to the Xbox Series X.
Knives Out is similar to other battle royal games, as 100 players are dropped onto a map of roughly six square kilometers. Players must navigate the buildings and factories on the map, pick up loot like weapons and armor, and defeat enemies. The last player standing at the end is the winner.
Once a player is killed, there is no chance to respawn, and as the game progresses, the map gets smaller, forcing players to get more tactical and aggressive. Apart from the single-player mode, there are also four-player or five-player squads. Though its graphics aren’t the best and it has often been described as a “PUBG knockoff,” Knives Out still boasts a big player base. There is also a wide range of elaborate costumes and skins to keep players interested and encourage them to spend money, like other similar battle royales.
So far, there has been no official confirmation that Knives Out will be coming to PS4 or PS5.
