A rumored leak of Sony’s PlayStation 5 gives fans a closer look at what the next generation’s user interface might look like.

So far, 2020 is a big year for both console players and designers. The PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X are slated for release during the latter half of this year. Throughout 2019, specifications and console features were slowly released to the public and confirmed by Sony and Microsoft officials. This is a trend that will likely continue up until the next generation of consoles is released.

The PS5’s design, general specifications, and backwards game/controller compatibility have all been confirmed by Sony. There are, however, some things that the public has yet to be filled in on, including the console’s user interface. There are two new leaks, however, that could change that.

Not long ago, a prototype of the devkit was leaked anonymously on 4chan. Naturally, a screengrab of the main dashboard garnered a lot of attention. Outside of demonstrating 1TB of available storage, the image doesn’t give away much and looks pretty similar to the PS4. At this stage, the biggest concern is fixing any outstanding bugs and updating hardware. So, a dramatic shift in design isn’t to be expected.

Just over a week after this initial leak, another photo was posted on SlashLeaks by an anonymous user. This version of the UI demonstrates a much cleaner and near-finished look.

There’s no way clear way to tell if the leak is legitimate. Plenty of PlayStation leaks have turned out to be complete fabrications. As Boy Genius Report points out, a fake PS5 boot sequence was leaked just a few days ago. If the leak is real, however, the new look is not too far out of line with what fans might have been expecting from an updated interface. The color scheme and design seem like a natural progression.

Like the price of the latest piece of PlayStation hardware (predictions put the price tag anywhere between $399 and $599), the console’s UI is still unconfirmed. A major PS5 launch event is expected later this month, so fans may not have to wait much longer for new information.
