Last month there was a controversy about Shenmue 3 and its Epic Games Store exclusivity. As we reported at the time, Ys Net stated they would not offer refunds to Kickstarter backers who had expected to redeem their copies on Steam. However, in the latest Kickstarter update, the developers seem to have reached an understanding with publisher Deep Silver and the Epic Games Store. The update includes a section concerning refunds, confirming that if backers are not satisfied with the offers of digital and physical versions, they can request a refund....

Sledgehammer’s co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield have said they absolutely felt the pressure from working on the world’s biggest video game franchise, Call of Duty, but say the pressure helped them create a great game. “I’d be dishonest if I said I didn’t feel the pressure,” Condrey told IndustryGamers. “Glen and I put everything on the line to start Sledgehammer Games. Sony has announced it’ll be airing a new instalment of its State of Play digital showcase tomorrow, 13th September, highlighting a range of PS5, PS4, and PSVR2 games. It’s a late one for those of us in the UK, alas, kicking off at 11pm BST/3pm PT/6pm ET, but it should be decently eventful too, promising around 20 minutes of reveals, updates, and gameplay for a total of 10 games. What those games are remains a mystery, but Sony does tease “great updates from our amazing Japanese partners, along with a few other surprises from developers all around the world”....

Atlus has released another daily trailer of the upcoming JRPG Soul Hackers 2, showcasing on one of the demons that will be featured in the game. This trailer shows off Seth, a demon inspired by Egyptian mythology that has been part of the series basically since the beginning. It also appeared in the recent Shin Megami Tensei V. Like most daily trailers, we also get the daily horoscope, which sees Leo at the top of the fortune ranking and Virgo at the bottom....

It’s been a while since I’ve returned to the fighting games genre. My last foray into fighters was with Mortal Kombat X, Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros. Wii U, and Injustice 2. I didn’t jump into the most recent Dragon Ball Z games, and Tekken didn’t really grab me enough to warrant my purchase. In a new interview on Robert Meyer Burnett’s video series Robservations, Bryan Fuller has been discussing his original Mirror Universe plans for Star Trek: Discovery. It’s a rare occurrence for the creator of Hannibal and Pushing Daisies to talk at length about his time on the flagship CBS All-Access Star Trek series. Fuller spent the early stages of his writing career on the bulk of Star Trek: Voyager, and penned a couple of Deep Space Nine instalments, so it seemed like developing a Trek show of his own might be a dream gig, but that dream soured long before Discovery‘s first season made it to our screens, with CBS asking Fuller to step down as showrunner in October 2016, almost a year ahead of Discovery‘s eventual debut....

With Star Wars Battlefront 2 about to launch for everyone, EA and DICE have posted an announcement to address this week’s backlash over the progression system. DICE’s GM Oskar Gabrielson released a statement apologising saying that “we didn’t get this right”. DICE has now turned off the ability to purchase Crystals and all progression will now be earned through gameplay. Crystals will reappear but only after they have reevaluated the progression system and made changes....

Valve just released some very handy improvements to the Steam platform. As announced in an official blog post, the new Steam Search system should make finding the right game for you easier than ever before. Developed as part of Steam Labs, these changes have been made to make Steam more powerful. Going forward, Steam users will have several new tools they can use to find games. Of course, you can still search by game title and tags haven’t been dropped completely....

No change at the very top of the Steam Top Sellers this week which is no huge surprise but there’s been a bit of a battle for second and third place. This week we know that 11-Bit Studios city management sim Frostpunk shifted more than 250,000 copies in 66 hours. This means that Harebrained Schemes’ Mech stomper BATTLETECH has likely sold less. Frostpunk as beat out BATTLETECH and taken second place in this week’s chart but BATTLETECH also holds two spots so it could be close....

Over the weekend, Fortnite World Cup Winner Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf was swatted while live streaming matches of Epic Games’ battle royale shooter on Twitch. Fortunately, Giersdorf walked away from the situation unharmed, but his swatting demonstrates that after all of these years, and everything that has happened to both swatters and their targets, this life-threatening “prank” remains a problem without a definitive solution. Today Bandai Namco announced that Scarlet Nexus has reached 2 million players. According to the announcement, made on Twitter, the milestone was reached including players on Game Pass, both on PC and Xbox. Considering that Scarlet Nexus is a completely new IP, this is certainly a flattering result. Sega Europe’s Brian Ayers has died at the age of 42. His colleague, Ryan King, broke the news on Twitter earlier today, and linked to a crowdfund campaign that confirmed Ayers had died yesterday, 23rd September, “after a short illness”. “Devastated that we’ve lost @Kaaaaneda who was truly the best of us - warm, funny, brilliant, a huge loss to us all,” King tweeted. “Games industry, please share this link far and wide xxx”...
