Sega originally had plans to produce a more ambitious high-definition revamp of Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue, Digital Foundry has revealed. While we ended up getting Shenmue I & II HD courtesy of developer d3t on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, both games utilised the same AM2 assets as the Dreamcast games. They looked nicer, sure, but it wasn’t a full-fledged HD makeover that fans were expecting. Turns out that Sega was actually working on properly overhauling Shenmue at one point, although according to DF the project was cancelled as a result of budget constraints and delays....

FromSoftware is renowned for making difficult games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but the first few hours of their latest offering, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, aren’t actually too bad. Sure, you’ll die a few times learning the ins and outs of the game’s stealth and combat systems, but the difficulty level doesn’t seem all that intense to start with. And then you meet the Chained Ogre, the first mini-boss and real challenge in Sekiro, and he’s like a brick wall smack dab in the middle of a racetrack....

Sega has polished off the first batch of screenshots for the upcoming PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One re-release of Shenmue I & II. The remasters were announced over the weekend and will be available as part of a digital and physical combo pack for $29.99. While not a complete remake from the ground-up, the Dreamcast classics will include improved visuals, a modern control scheme, plus various other additions. Shenmue I & II have yet to attract a concrete release date but they’re due out at some point this year....

Developer Sloclap has released some details on what is coming to kung-fu beat-em-up Sifu in its autumn update. In August, Sifu received a beefy content update, which featured a new scoring system and modifiers which allowed players to customise the difficulty. Two new outfits were also added, and Slocap teased more to come in the autumn update. Included in the roadmap for Sifu in the autumn update is the replay editor and additional modifiers....

In lieu of the PlayStation Network outage, Sony created a ‘Welcome Back’ customer appreciation program as a way to earn back the trust of its fanbase. Sony promised PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable owners an extensive list of perks, including two free games and a free month of PlayStation Plus. Today, Sony has released further details of this program for North America. While these goodies are not yet available, PS3 and PSP owners who had registered accounts prior to the outage will have access to them shortly after the PlayStation Network is fully restored....

Sony has announced that it will be releasing a limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle featuring a copy of Square Enix’s upcoming Disney-RPG, Kingdom Hearts 3. It’s not just a bog standard console, though. The PS4 Pro featured in the bundle comes packing a lovely Kingdom Hearts-themed pattern, specifically the series’ iconic emblem design, topped off with a leather-texture finish. Around this time last year, Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games swung onto the scene and delivered what was hailed by many to be one of the best superhero games of all time. Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games has offered to remove an in-game marriage proposal that it included in the PlayStation 4-exclusive at the request of a fan. Tyler Schultz contacted the former Resistance developer on Twitter back in May, when he asked if it would be possible to include the message ‘Madison, will you marry me?’ in the game somewhere as an Easter egg. Insomniac agreed, and included the proposal in Spidey’s open-world adventure on a movie theatre marquee....

Star Citizen is free to play from now until the end of the month. As part of the in-game annual Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE), players are welcome to “freely test-fly” 120+ ships, including the Drake Corsair which supports a crew of up to four players and boasts living quarters and “strong armaments”. Players will be able to “explore the digital event as they would any convention, from strolling through fully interactive expo halls and seeing the latest ships on display each day in incredible detail, to meeting up with friends to explore and partake in exciting activities, or chance encounters with strangers that launch new friendships”....

Developer tri-Ace Inc. is working with Square Enix on a new entry into the Star Ocean franchise, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. The newly announced title is called Star Ocean The Divine Force, and it will be coming to PC through Steam in 2022. The reveal was accompanied by a debut trailer, which gives you a taste of the game’s story, shows off some combat and exploration, and introduces the two protagonists, Raymond and Laeticia....

EA has shipped 14 million units of Star Wars: Battlefront, a figure which is significantly higher than the publisher’s expectation for the multiplayer shooter. Initial targets for the title were in the 9-10 million region, but back in October upped the game’s forecast to 13 million units. This figure was reached at the end of the holiday season, with a further million units added to the total in the months that followed....
